Back to the '80s

If the Yankees wind up, in effect, trading Pettit for Brown and if they do, in the end, sign Sheffield, they are going to be a very, very hard team to root for. It's more than usually hard to try to imagine what the thinking process is this off-season. It's even more than usually easy to imagine that the thinking process consists of George being George. I hope what this represents is George cutting out his "baseball people" and taking the reins himself because it's starting to smell like the 80s and one would wish the coming trainwreck to fall entirely on his shoulders.

The Meaning of Simple Words

Apparently, the view of the dominant media in this country is that a small majority of Americans like George Bush, but a HUGE minority hates him.

You have to believe that they can flog this nag only so far.

Tumbling Towards Christmas

A Major Work Wobble has been dealt with and snuffed out, leaving us all a little frazzled, but with the good result that the yearly frenzy-crescendo of the holidays seems nothing like as daunting as usual. Also, we lost our tenant. Filing that space is always a process that generates a certain low level of anxiety, but this, too, is muted by my apparent survival as an employed-American. Grace is going to have a very nice Christmas.

Here's something I ought to be thinking about much more than I have. Grace will be seven years old in a few months. So far, her religious education is zilch. As I've said, I'm not a person of faith, but I am a person who regards that lack with regret. I need to get off the schneid with this and provide at least the basics for her.

I'm a lazy bastard.
